- Technical/academic vocabulary: lower case (“diamesic translation”), without hyphens (“interlinguistic”, “psycholinguistically”). In general, avoid initial caps except for proper nouns.
- Quotes: Usedouble quote marks for quotes and single quotes for quotes within quotes. All quotes to run on within the main body of the article.
- Numbers: Spell out numbers zero to nine, use numbers from 10 upwards, and combination for 1 million.
- Bulleted/numbered lists: Where each item in a list is a complete sentence, it should take an initial cap and a closing full stop. Where it isn’t a full sentence, no initial cap and close each bulleted/numbered item with a semicolon, except the last, which gets a full stop.
- Publication titles:, book titles in italics (Subliminal by Leonard Mlodinow), articles, film titles, paintings etc in quotes (“Trainspotting”).
- Dashes: spaced en-dashes
- Acronyms: For first use, please give full title and acronym (“ASR (automated speech recognition)”)
- Footnotes: No footnotes, but do include a short list of references
- English rather than American English: -ise endings, to practise, aluminium. No italics for emphasis
